Privacy policy

Draft — pending legal review

This document is a draft and is being reviewed by lawyers. It may change before Vivaham launches.

Last updated: October 7, 2026

This privacy policy explains how HappyChases Media Works (OPC) Private Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”), a company incorporated in India, collects, uses, shares and protects personal data when you use Vivaham — the website at vivaham.site and the Vivaham web app (together, the “Service”). For the purposes of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (“DPDP Act”), we are the Data Fiduciary for the personal data we process to run the Service.

Vivaham is a matrimony service for members of tribal communities. To help families find a suitable partner, we need to handle some very personal information — including ID documents, tribe, clan, faith, family details and private conversations. We take this responsibility seriously, and we have written this policy in plain language. Please also read our Terms of use.

1. Information we collect

1.1 Information you give us

  • Account details: the mobile number of each person on a family account, their name and their relationship to the bride or groom; your language choice.
  • Profile details of the bride or groom: name, gender, date of birth, tribe, sub-group, the state where the tribe is ST-listed, clan, sub-clan, clan group, mother’s clan and sub-clan (and father’s clan for matrilineal communities), native and current village or town, marital status, number of children, height, education, occupation, income band (optional), faith (optional), diet, smoking and drinking (optional), languages, living arrangements after marriage, family details, an “about me” text or voice recording, and photos.
  • ID documents: the ID document uploaded for verification (Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence or ST/caste certificate), and any optional documents for further verification. See section 6 for how these are protected.
  • Consent records: when and how the bride or groom gave consent for their profile, and any later changes or withdrawal.
  • Activity on the Service: filters and saved filters, shortlists, suggestions, family notes, interests (including voice notes), acceptances, messages, voice notes and photos in family group chats and private chats, blocks, reports and success stories you choose to share.
  • Messages to us: anything you send to our support team or Grievance Officer.

1.2 Information collected automatically

  • Technical data: IP address, device and browser type, operating system, language, and the date and time of your visits.
  • Usage and security logs: logins, the actions taken on a family account and by whom, and records needed to detect fraud and abuse.
  • Cookies and similar storage: only those needed for the Service to work (see section 5).

1.3 Information from others

  • Your family members may add information about you to a profile on your family account (for example, your clan or village), and family notes about other profiles.
  • Other members may send you interests and messages, report a profile, or block you.
  • Service providers tell us whether an OTP, SMS, WhatsApp message or email was delivered.

2. How we use your information

We use personal data, on the basis of your consent or as otherwise allowed by law, to:

  • create and run your account and family account, and let each family member log in with their own mobile number;
  • verify mobile numbers, check the name and date of birth on ID documents, enforce the legal marriage age (21 for men, 18 for women), confirm eligibility, and detect duplicate or fake profiles;
  • show profiles to other verified members according to your settings and both families’ filters, recommend matches and explain “why this match”;
  • run interests, family group chats, private chats and contact exchange;
  • send you OTPs, notifications and service messages on the channels you choose;
  • keep members safe: our automated systems check profiles, interests and messages — including in family group chats and private chats — for signs of trafficking, fraud, harassment or abuse (for example, one account contacting many women, or talk of jobs, money or travel before an interest is accepted). Flagged or reported content is reviewed by trained staff;
  • respond to your requests, complaints and reports;
  • improve the Service using aggregated statistics (for example, registrations and verified profiles by state, district and tribe), which do not identify you; and
  • comply with the law, respond to lawful requests from authorities, and protect the rights and safety of our members and others.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not send marketing messages unless you separately agree to receive them.

3. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only as follows:

  • With other verified members, as your settings allow. Profile details are shown to members whose filters match; photos, faith, income and current location follow the visibility you choose; family contact details are shown only after an interest is accepted; phone numbers are shared only by mutual choice. ID documents are never shown to any member, including your own family.
  • Within your family account: members of your family account see the profile, matches, shortlists, notes and the family group chat. They cannot read the private chat between the bride and groom.
  • With the other family, when an interest is accepted: the family group chat shows each member’s name, relationship to the bride or groom, and verification badge.
  • With service providers who process data for us under contract and only on our instructions — for example, hosting and storage providers, and SMS, OTP, WhatsApp and email providers.
  • With authorities, when required by law, or when we believe in good faith that it is necessary to prevent trafficking, child marriage, or harm to a person — including reporting to the police.
  • In a business transfer, such as a merger or sale, where the new owner continues to protect your data as this policy describes.

Success stories are published on our website only when both spouses have opted in, and only the content they approved. If either of you withdraws, or deletes your profile, the story comes off the website within minutes.

4. Sensitive information

Tribe, clan, faith, family details, ID documents and private conversations are sensitive. We collect them only because they are needed for a matrimony service built around community rules, or to keep members safe. Faith, income and some other fields are optional, and you can choose “prefer not to say” or hide them.

5. Cookies

We use only essential cookies and similar storage — for example, to keep you logged in, remember your language and protect against misuse. We do not use advertising cookies or allow third parties to track you for advertising. If we later decide to use analytics, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

6. How we protect your information

  • ID documents are encrypted in the application (with keys kept separately from the storage) and stored in a separate, private storage bucket used only for ID documents. They are never available through a public link.
  • For Aadhaar we accept only the masked Aadhaar from UIDAI, which hides the first 8 digits, and we never store the full Aadhaar number. If a full Aadhaar is uploaded by mistake, it is deleted as soon as our team reviews it. From ID documents we keep only the document type, the verification result, the date of birth and the last 4 digits of the document number.
  • Only a small number of named, authorised staff can open an ID document, through our internal admin tool, and every view is logged (who, when, which document and why).
  • Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to systems is limited to people who need it.

No system is perfectly secure. If a personal data breach happens, we will inform affected users and the Data Protection Board of India as the law requires.

7. How long we keep your information

  • We keep your profile and account data while your account is active. A profile with no activity for 3 months is hidden, not deleted.
  • When the bride or groom deletes their profile, we delete the profile and its data, including ID documents. Messages they wrote are replaced with “message deleted”, and notes about them held by their own family are removed.
  • We may keep limited records after deletion — such as registration and verification records, logs, consent records and safety reports — for as long as the law requires (for example, for 180 days under the IT Rules, 2021) or as needed to investigate a safety report or legal claim. After that, they are deleted or made anonymous.
  • When personal data is no longer needed for the purpose it was collected for, we delete it.

8. Your rights

Under the DPDP Act, you have the right to:

  • access a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we use it, and know with whom it has been shared;
  • correct, complete or update your data — most of it directly in your profile settings;
  • erase your data by deleting your profile, or by asking us;
  • withdraw consent at any time — this will not affect what was done before, but we may not be able to continue the Service without it;
  • grievance redressal — to have your complaint handled by our Grievance Officer (section 13); and
  • nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become unable to do so.

To use these rights, use your profile settings or write to our Grievance Officer. We may need to confirm your identity first. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

9. Children’s privacy

The Service is only for adults of legal marriageable age: 21 or older for men and 18 or older for women. Nobody may create a profile for anyone younger. If we learn that a profile belongs to someone below the legal age, we will remove it, and where it suggests an attempt at child marriage we may report it to the authorities.

10. Where your data is stored

Our servers and storage providers may be located in India or in other countries. Wherever your data is stored, we protect it as this policy describes and transfer it only where the law allows.

Our website may link to other websites, such as government helplines. Their privacy practices are their own, and we encourage you to read their policies.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If we make important changes, we will tell you in the app or by message before they take effect, and ask for your consent again where needed. The date at the top shows when this policy was last updated.
